I have been working with various metals for over 18 years, and Corten steel is one of the most interesting materials for outdoor sculptures. Unlike stainless steel that resists corrosion, Corten steel is designed to rust in a controlled way.

Corten steel contains copper, chromium, and other alloying elements that create a stable rust-like appearance when exposed to weather. This rust layer actually protects the steel underneath from further corrosion.
