Gentle Grace — FRP Flocking Spotted Deer Sculptures for Luxury Garden Resort
Nestled in the lush hills of Ubud, Bali, the Botanic Garden Resort prides itself on creating a seamless connection between architecture and nature. When the resort’s landscape architect envisioned a deer family grazing in the tropical garden sculptures such as our Elegant Garden Rabbitss, Y Sculptures brought that vision to life with three life-size FRP spotted deer sculptures featuring a revolutionary flocking finish that blends naturally with the living garden environment.
Project Background
The resort’s 12-acre garden features over 200 species of tropical plants, meditation pavilions, and winding pathways designed for contemplative strolls. The owner wanted art that would feel indigenous to the landscape — not imposed upon it. “I didn’t want a bronze deer that shouts ‘I am art,’” he explained. “I wanted deer that whisper ‘I belong here.’”
Real deer were considered but ruled out due to the resort’s open layout and the complex veterinary requirements. Y Sculptures was approached for a sculptural solution that could capture the grace and natural beauty of spotted deer (Axis axis) without the maintenance of living animals.
Design Concept
A family of three deer was designed: a stag with a majestic antler rack, a doe in a gentle grazing posture, and a fawn lying in the grass — creating a narrative of family and tranquility that resonates with the resort’s wellness-focused clientele.
Each deer stands between 1.5 and 2.0 meters at the shoulder — slightly below life-size to maintain a delicate scale within the garden setting. The poses were carefully choreographed to create a natural grouping: the stag stands alert but relaxed, head raised as if watching over the family; the doe bends to nibble tropical foliage; the fawn rests in a clearing, visible from the pathway.
The flocking finish was customized to replicate the texture and pattern of deer hide. A specialist dye blend was created in collaboration with our flocking supplier to achieve the warm chestnut brown with distinctive white spots that characterize Axis deer. The flocking fibers were cut to varying lengths (0.8–1.5mm) to create visual depth, with shorter fibers on the face and legs and longer fibers on the body to suggest a coat of fur.
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge 1: Tropical Climate Durability. Bali’s high humidity, frequent rain, and intense UV exposure required an enhanced outdoor flocking specification. Y Sculptures applied a triple-layer protective system: waterproof base seal, UV-stabilized flocking adhesive with antimicrobial additives (to prevent mold in the humid environment), and a breathable clear nano-coating that repels water while allowing moisture vapor to escape.
Challenge 2: Antler Integration. The stag’s antlers needed to be structurally sound while maintaining natural proportions. We fabricated them using a lightweight FRP core with wax-dipped natural branch tips for an authentic texture, then flocked with a custom matte brown blend. The antlers are detachable for shipping and can be replaced if damaged.
Challenge 3: Landscape Integration. The deer needed to appear naturally positioned within the garden without damaging existing plantings. Bases were designed as ground-level platforms that can be partially concealed with tropical ground cover, creating the illusion that the deer are standing naturally in the grass.

Reception
Since installation in January 2025, the deer sculptures have become the resort’s most photographed feature. Guest reviews regularly mention the deer as a highlight, with many guests initially mistaking them for real animals from a distance. The resort’s occupancy rate for garden-view rooms increased by 18% following the installation, which the management attributes in part to the enhanced garden aesthetic.
The project was featured in “Garden Design Asia” magazine and received a Merit Award at the 2025 Bali Landscape Architecture Awards.
