Elegant Garden Rabbits — Hand-Painted FRP Animal Sculpture Set for Botanical Garden

Gardens & Resorts

In the spring of 2025, Y Sculptures was commissioned by a premier botanical garden in the southeastern United States to create a series of hand-painted FRP rabbit sculptures. The project, ultimately named the Elegant Garden Rabbit Sculpture Set, would become one of the most charming and talked-about installations in the garden’s history. This case study explores the journey from initial concept to final installation, detailing the creative process, technical decisions, and the lasting impact of these whimsical yet refined animal sculptures.

Project Background

The client, a well-established botanical garden spanning over 40 acres, had recently completed a major renovation of their children’s discovery area and formal French-style parterre gardens. They sought to add a whimsical element that would appeal to both children and adults—something that bridged the gap between fine garden art and playful storytelling. After reviewing portfolios from multiple sculpture manufacturers worldwide, they discovered the work of Y Sculptures through our online gallery and were immediately drawn to our expertise in lifelike animal sculptures with a painterly finish.

The garden’s creative director explained in the initial consultation: “We didn’t want cartoonish figures. We wanted animals that looked like they belonged in a storybook—elegant, graceful, with a touch of old-world charm. Rabbits were the obvious choice because they are universally beloved, fit naturally into a garden setting, and allow for a wide range of poses and expressions.”

Y Sculptures proposed a set of twelve rabbit sculptures in varied sizes and poses, designed to be placed throughout the garden’s winding pathways, flower beds, and resting areas. The rabbits would appear to be interacting with their environment—some grazing peacefully, others sitting upright with alert ears, and a few playfully stretching or hopping. The garden’s design team selected 8 poses from our initial concept sketches, and the Elegant Garden Rabbit Sculpture Set was born.

Design Concept

The design concept for the rabbit sculptures drew inspiration from several sources. Visually, we referenced the detailed botanical illustrations of Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the 18th-century painter known for his exquisite renderings of flowers and small animals. The garden’s aesthetic was heavily European in influence, with formal hedges, gravel pathways, and ornate ironwork providing the backdrop. The rabbits needed to complement—not compete with—this refined setting.

We developed each rabbit sculpture with distinct character traits. The largest sculpture, standing 1.5 meters tall, depicts a majestic buck rabbit seated upright with one ear slightly flopped—a pose of alert curiosity. The smallest, at just 0.6 meters, shows a baby rabbit nibbling a clover blossom. Between these extremes, the other sculptures capture moments of rest, grooming, exploration, and social interaction. Each sculpture tells a part of a larger story: a day in the life of a rabbit community in an enchanted garden.

The color palette was carefully selected to harmonize with the garden’s seasonal blooms. Base coats of warm cream and soft brown were layered with subtle highlights of amber, taupe, and even hints of sage green to reflect the surrounding foliage. The hand-painted finish was critical—unlike mass-produced sculptures with factory-applied paint, each rabbit received multiple layers of hand-applied acrylic urethane paint, sealed with UV-resistant clear coat to ensure longevity in outdoor conditions. The result is a surface quality that mimics the soft texture of real fur while being durable enough to withstand rain, sun, and curious hands.

Technical Specifications

All sculptures in the Elegant Garden Rabbit set were fabricated using hand-laid fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP), a material chosen for its combination of strength, weather resistance, and ability to hold fine surface detail. Below are the key technical specifications:

  • Material: Hand-laid FRP (Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastic) with gel coat finish
  • Height Range: 0.6 meters (24 inches) to 1.5 meters (59 inches)
  • Number of Sculptures: 8 unique poses, 12 total pieces
  • Weight: 8 kg (smallest) to 35 kg (largest)
  • Surface Finish: Hand-painted acrylic urethane with UV-stabilized clear topcoat
  • Base: Integrated FRP base plate with pre-drilled anchor holes for ground mounting
  • Weather Resistance: Rated for outdoor use in USDA zones 5–9, temperature range -20°C to 50°C
  • Warranty: 5 years against manufacturing defects and UV degradation
  • Mounting: Stainless steel ground anchors with concealed bolt covers

The FRP fabrication process began with clay sculpting by our master artisans, who hand-shaped each rabbit to capture the nuance of anatomy and expression. From the clay originals, silicone molds were created for each pose. The FRP layers were hand-laid into these molds, with additional fiberglass reinforcement added at stress points such as the legs and ears. After demolding, each piece was seam-finished, sanded, primed, and prepared for the painting stage—a process that typically required 3–5 days per sculpture.

Budget & Timeline

The total project budget was $18,000 USD, which encompassed the full scope of design, fabrication, painting, packing, and shipping to the garden’s location in the southern United States. The budget was broken down as follows:

  • Design & Sculpting: $4,500 (25%)
  • Mold Making & FRP Fabrication: $5,500 (30.6%)
  • Hand Painting & Finishing: $4,000 (22.2%)
  • Packing, Crating & Shipping: $3,000 (16.7%)
  • Project Management & Installation Support: $1,000 (5.5%)

The timeline for the project was 8 weeks from signed contract to delivery. This aggressive schedule was made possible by our dedicated team of 6 artisans working in parallel on different stages of the process. The timeline unfolded as follows:

  • Week 1: Design approval and final pose selection
  • Weeks 2–3: Clay sculpting and mold making
  • Weeks 4–5: FRP layup, demolding, and seam finishing
  • Weeks 6–7: Hand painting, sealing, and quality inspection
  • Week 8: Packing, crating, shipping, and installation guidance

Despite the tight timeline, all 12 sculptures were completed and shipped on schedule, arriving at the garden on day 55. The client’s installation team, working from our detailed mounting guide, had all pieces installed within three days of arrival.

Key Challenges

Every custom sculpture project presents unique challenges, and the Elegant Garden Rabbit set was no exception. Below are the primary obstacles we encountered and how our team overcame them:

1. Anatomical Accuracy at Scale. Rabbits have distinctive body proportions—long ears, powerful hind legs, compact torsos—that can easily look distorted when scaled up or down. Our challenge was to maintain realistic proportions across a range of sizes from 0.6m to 1.5m while ensuring each pose was physically stable. Our master sculptor consulted veterinary anatomy references and even observed live rabbits at a local farm to ensure authenticity. The solution involved creating armature frameworks for the larger pieces and adjusting weight distribution so that the center of gravity remained within the base footprint.

2. Color Consistency Across Varied Sizes. With 12 sculptures being hand-painted by multiple artists, maintaining consistent coloration was a significant challenge. Even slight variations in paint mixing could result in a rabbit looking noticeably different from its companions. We addressed this by creating a detailed “color map” for each pose, specifying exact pigment ratios for every body area. A master painter mixed all paints in large batches sufficient for the entire set, and a color card was used to verify each coat before proceeding. The final quality inspection included placing all 12 sculptures side by side under natural light to check for uniformity.

3. Outdoor Durability Requirements. The sculptures would be exposed to intense southern US sun, occasional frost, and high humidity. Standard FRP finishes would not be sufficient. We upgraded the gel coat to include UV stabilizers and applied four layers of marine-grade clear coat—the same material used on luxury yacht finishes. This added cost and time to the painting stage but was essential for the garden’s requirement of a 5-year minimum appearance warranty. The client’s maintenance team was also provided with a care kit and detailed instructions for seasonal cleaning and waxing.

4. Shipping Large, Fragile Pieces. Transporting 12 fiberglass sculptures, including one that is 1.5 meters tall, across international borders required careful planning. Each sculpture was individually packed in a custom foam-lined crate, with additional internal bracing around the ears and legs—the most vulnerable areas. We worked with a freight forwarder experienced in art shipping to manage customs clearance and final-mile delivery. All pieces arrived without damage, a testament to the packing team’s expertise.

5. Integration with Garden Aesthetics. The garden’s design team initially worried that 12 sculptures placed throughout the grounds might feel cluttered or theme-park-like. We collaborated closely to develop a placement plan that considered sightlines, plant heights, and visitor flow. The rabbits were intentionally positioned at varying distances from pathways—some immediately visible, others half-hidden behind shrubs to create a sense of discovery. This careful staging transformed the set from a collection of objects into an immersive narrative experience.

Client Feedback

Three months after installation, the garden’s management team provided detailed feedback on the project. Their comments were overwhelmingly positive, with particular praise for the quality of the hand-painted finish and the thoughtful integration of the sculptures into the landscape.

“The rabbit sculptures have exceeded every expectation we had. Our visitors—both children and adults—are absolutely charmed by them. We see families taking photos with the rabbits every single day, and they’ve become the most photographed feature in our garden. The quality of the hand-painting is stunning; up close, you can see individual brushstrokes that give the fur a lifelike texture that no factory finish could replicate. Y Sculptures delivered not just sculptures, but a story.”
Creative Director, Southeastern Botanical Garden

The garden reported a measurable increase in visitor dwell time, with families spending an average of 20 additional minutes exploring the areas where the rabbits were placed. Social media engagement also rose significantly, with the hashtag #gardenrabbits generating over 3,000 posts in the first month alone. Several visitors specifically mentioned coming to the garden because they had seen photos of the rabbit sculptures on social media or in local news coverage.

Perhaps most tellingly, the garden has since commissioned Y Sculptures for two additional sets of animal sculptures—a family of foxes for a woodland area and a set of songbirds for a new aviary garden. The Elegant Garden Rabbit Sculpture Set not only fulfilled its original purpose but also established a creative partnership that continues to grow.

This project demonstrates Y Sculptures’ ability to deliver custom, high-quality FRP sculptures that meet the specific aesthetic and functional requirements of botanical gardens and resort properties.
