Cartoon Chicken Kai Ai — Adorable FRP Chicken Sculptures for Events and Displays
In the world of event marketing and themed retail, character mascots play an invaluable role in creating brand recognition and emotional connection with audiences. In early 2025, a popular Taiwanese bubble tea chain with over 300 locations across Asia contacted Y Sculptures with a delightful brief: they wanted to create a series of large-scale chicken character sculptures for their flagship store in Taipei and for use in seasonal promotional events. The character — a bright yellow, round-bodied cartoon chick named “Kai Ai” (meaning “Lovely Chicken” in Mandarin) — had been a beloved part of the brand’s packaging and social media content for years. Now, the client wanted to bring Kai Ai to life as a physical sculpture that customers could see, touch, and photograph.
The client had previously used inflatable mascots for events, but these lacked the durability and premium appearance they wanted for their permanent flagship installation. They needed sculptures that could withstand both indoor and outdoor use, maintain vibrant colors over years of exposure, and present the Kai Ai character with the same charm and precision as the brand’s carefully crafted 2D artwork. After evaluating several sculpture manufacturers across China and Southeast Asia, they chose Y Sculptures based on our portfolio of character-accurate IP sculptures and our reputation for high-quality hand-painted finishes.
Background & Client Vision
The bubble tea brand had built its identity around the Kai Ai character — a cheerful, round yellow chick with oversized eyes, a tiny orange beak, and small wings perpetually spread in a welcoming gesture. The character appeared on everything from cup designs to store signage to employee uniforms, creating a cohesive and instantly recognizable brand identity. The flagship store in Taipei’s Ximending shopping district — one of the busiest pedestrian areas in Asia — was undergoing a complete redesign to create a more immersive brand experience. The centerpiece of the redesign was to be a life-sized Kai Ai sculpture positioned at the store entrance, greeting customers with its characteristic open-winged pose.
Beyond the flagship installation, the client also wanted portable Kai Ai sculptures that could be used at promotional events, pop-up stores, and seasonal festivals across Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China. These sculptures needed to be lightweight enough for easy transport but durable enough to withstand the rigors of frequent setup and takedown. The client specified that the sculptures should range in height from 0.8 meters (for tabletop event displays) to 1.5 meters (for the flagship store entrance), with the ability to produce additional units at various sizes for future needs. The bright yellow color — the brand’s signature hue — needed to be perfectly matched and protected against fading.
Design Concept & Inspiration
The Kai Ai character’s design is deceptively simple — a round yellow body, two small wings, two little feet, a tiny beak, and enormous expressive eyes. But translating this simplicity into a three-dimensional sculpture that captures the character’s charm required meticulous attention to proportion and expression. The character’s charm lies in its eyes — oversized, glossy black orbs with bright white highlights that convey a sense of innocent curiosity and warmth. Our sculpting team recognized that the eyes would be the single most important element of the sculpture, determining whether the finished piece captured the character’s personality or fell into the “uncanny valley” of misplaced proportions.
Our design process began with the creation of multiple clay maquettes at 1:3 scale, allowing us to quickly iterate on proportions and test different interpretations of the character’s facial geometry. The client’s design team participated in weekly video review sessions, providing feedback on each iteration until the perfect balance was achieved. The final approved design featured a subtly three-dimensional interpretation of the flat character — the body retained its perfectly round silhouette from the front but gained gentle curvature in profile, making it read as a volumetric form rather than a cut-out. The wings were positioned at a 45-degree angle from the body, creating a welcoming, open posture that invited interaction. The feet were designed as small rounded pegs, keeping the character’s cute, slightly clumsy appearance while providing stable support.
Technical Specifications
The Kai Ai sculptures were fabricated using high-quality fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) with a focus on achieving a smooth, flawless finish that would showcase the character’s simple but precise color scheme. The bright yellow body — the brand’s signature color — demanded exceptional paint quality and durability, as any fading or discoloration would be immediately noticeable against the character’s uncomplicated design.

The most technically demanding aspect of the painting process was achieving a perfectly uniform yellow across the entire body surface. Yellow is one of the most challenging colors in paint formulation — it has poor hiding power compared to darker colors, requiring multiple coats to achieve full opacity without visible variation. Our painting team applied seven separate coats of yellow paint: two coats of white primer, two coats of yellow undercoat, two coats of the final color-matched yellow, and one UV-protective clear coat. Each coat was wet-sanded with progressively finer grits (up to 2000-grit) to achieve a surface smoothness comparable to automotive factory paint. The result is a vibrant, uniform yellow that reads as “perfect” even under the bright LED lighting of the flagship store.
Project Budget & Timeline
The total project budget for all five sculptures (one flagship unit and four event units) was $15,000 USD. This represented exceptional value for a multi-unit custom IP sculpture production with automotive-grade finishing. The budget was allocated as follows:
- Design and Mold Development (25% — $3,750): Character analysis, clay maquette creation, client approval process, and master mold fabrication
- FRP Fabrication (35% — $5,250): Hand lay-up fabrication for all five units, including curing, demolding, and initial finishing
- Painting and Finishing (30% — $4,500): Surface preparation, multi-coat yellow paint system, eye detailing, and clear coat
- Packaging and Logistics (10% — $1,500): Custom foam inserts, individual boxes, and consolidated shipping to Taipei
The production timeline was scheduled for 7 weeks — an aggressive schedule made possible by the relative simplicity of the character’s geometry and the use of a single master mold for multiple units:
- Week 1: Design finalization, 3D modeling, and client approval of proportions
- Week 2: Master clay sculpting and silicone mold creation
- Week 3-4: FRP fabrication of all five units (concurrent production using the same mold)
- Week 5: Surface preparation, priming, and initial yellow paint coats
- Week 6: Final color coats, eye detailing, and clear coat application
- Week 7: Quality control, packaging, and air freight shipping to Taipei
The project was completed two days ahead of schedule, with all five sculptures arriving in Taipei in time for the flagship store’s grand reopening celebration. The event sculptures were also deployed at a concurrent bubble tea festival in Kaohsiung, where they served as photo backdrops and brand ambassadors.
Key Challenges & Solutions
The primary challenge of this project was achieving color consistency across multiple production units. When producing sculptures from the same mold but in separate fabrication runs, there is always a risk of slight color variation between units due to differences in paint mixing, application technique, or curing conditions. For a character defined by a single signature color, any variation would be unacceptable. Our solution was to mix all of the yellow paint required for all five sculptures in a single batch, carefully measured and documented, then stored in sealed containers under controlled conditions. Each coat was applied in a single painting session with the same team of painters, ensuring consistent technique and curing parameters. The final color was verified against the Pantone standard using a spectrophotometer on each completed sculpture.
A second challenge was the character’s large, expressive eyes. In the 2D artwork, the eyes are perfectly circular black disks with bright white highlight dots. Translating this to a 3D surface required creating a perfectly smooth, glossy finish that would reflect light consistently from all viewing angles. Our painters developed a specialized technique: the black eye area was first painted with multiple coats of high-gloss black paint, then wet-sanded to a mirror finish. The white highlights were applied as precise dots using a custom stencil system, then covered with a final layer of clear gloss to integrate them seamlessly into the surface. The result is eyes that have a deep, liquid appearance, with the highlights appearing to float on the surface — exactly matching the look of the animated character.
A third challenge was the event sculptures’ requirement for portability without sacrificing durability. The smaller 0.8-meter units needed to withstand frequent transport, setup, and takedown cycles — potentially dozens of times per year. Our solution was to fabricate these units with a slightly thicker FRP layup in high-stress areas (particularly where the wings join the body and at the base connection), while keeping the overall wall thickness minimal in non-stressed areas to maintain light weight. We also developed a custom padded carrying case for each event sculpture, with internal foam cutouts that held the sculpture securely during transport and prevented damage from impacts.
Finally, the client requested that the flagship sculpture be designed to accommodate a small interior lighting element — they wanted the character’s cheeks to have a subtle warm glow. Our team integrated a low-voltage LED lighting system into the sculpture’s head, with the light diffused through a translucent section of the FRP behind the cheek area. The LEDs are powered by a concealed USB connection in the base, making the system easy to maintain and replace if needed. This added feature was completed without compromising the sculpture’s structural integrity or the smoothness of the exterior finish.
Client Feedback & Impact
The flagship Kai Ai sculpture was unveiled at the Ximending store reopening to enthusiastic crowds. Within hours of the opening, photos of the sculpture flooded social media platforms, with the hashtag #KaiAiInTaipei trending locally. The store reported a 40% increase in foot traffic during the first week compared to the pre-renovation period, with many customers specifically mentioning that they came to see the sculpture. The soft LED cheek lighting became an unexpected hit, with evening visitors particularly delighted by the warm glow effect.
The event sculptures were equally successful. At the Kaohsiung bubble tea festival, the Kai Ai sculptures served as the brand’s primary photo attraction, with over 3,000 photos taken with the characters over the three-day event. The brand’s marketing team reported that the sculptures generated more social media engagement than any previous promotional element, including giveaways and live performances. The portability of the smaller sculptures allowed the brand to deploy them at multiple events simultaneously, maximizing their return on investment.
The client’s CEO personally wrote to our team: “The Kai Ai sculptures are everything we hoped for and more. The yellow is absolutely perfect — it’s our brand color, exactly as we’ve always seen it in our minds. But what really moved us is the expression in the eyes. You’ve captured the soul of our character. Every time I walk into the flagship store and see Kai Ai greeting customers with that warm, curious look, I feel proud. Thank you for treating our brand character with such care and artistry.”
Six months after delivery, the brand ordered two additional event sculptures for use in their new Singapore and Kuala Lumpur locations. This repeat order validated the quality and durability of the original production and confirmed the sculptures’ effectiveness as a brand activation tool. The Kai Ai project has become one of our most referenced case studies for IP character sculpture work, demonstrating how faithful translation of 2D character design into 3D form can create powerful emotional connections between brands and their audiences.
