“GRIMLOCK” The Three-Headed Guardian
The “GRIMLOCK” project was a custom-designed, large-scale inflatable art installation commissioned by the “CITY OF CREEKSIDE PARK DISTRICT” for their annual fall community festival. The goal was to create a massive, central landmark that would provide a significant “wow factor,” enhance event branding, and serve as a photogenic centerpiece. This installation required a balance of high-end custom design, durable materials for outdoor use, and an aggressive production timeline.
2. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: The Myth of Park Stewardship
The design concept was centered around a modern interpretation of a ancient guardian myth. The park district wanted a figure that represented both power and protection.
-
Conceptual Core: The Three-Headed Dragon was chosen to represent a vigilant guardian watching over the land, the air, and the water (referencing the park’s setting of field, sky, and lake).
-
The Look of Grimlock: We moved away from dark, European-style fantasy and adopted a more vibrant, “psychedelic-mythical” palette. The base orange, overlaid with bright teal, purple, and yellow “scale patterns,” is eye-catching, approachable for children, and stands out vividly against natural green park environments and blue skies.
-
Key Design Features:
-
Three Head Articulation: The heads were positioned at varying angles to provide dynamic, threatening, and observant views from 360 degrees.
-
Scale Integration: The complex, colorful scale patterns were printed directly onto the fabric, rather than patched, to maintain structural integrity while achieving a high-fidelity art look.
-
Branding Integration: A critical component was the integration of a clean “GRIMLOCK” logo panel and the sponsoring Park District logo on the dragon’s chest, ensuring clear event visibility in all photographs.

3. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
This required a high-volume, continuous-airflow structure to maintain its rigid form.
-
Product Type: Custom Cold-Air Inflatable (Continuous Airflow).
-
Size (Fully Inflated):
-
Height: 28 feet (8.5 meters)
-
Length (Nose to Tail): 40 feet (12.2 meters)
-
Wing Span: 25 feet (7.6 meters)
-
-
Material:
-
Primary Body: Premium 18oz (610 GSM) UV-resistant, fire-retardant Vinyl-coated Polyester (PVC).
-
Reinforcement: Internal baffles made of high-tenacity polyester; seams are double or triple stitched with heavy-duty bonded nylon thread.
-
Digital Print: High-resolution (1440 DPI) full-coverage digital print, finished with a UV protective laminate to prevent fading.
-
-
Structure: Engineered internal air baffles ensure the complex shapes (multiple heads, wings) maintain their form even with minor leaks or wind stress.
-
Deflation: Integrated heavy-duty deflation zippers (YKK) for rapid takedown.
-
Ground Rigging: A complex tether system utilizing 10 internal d-ring attachment points, connected to heavy-duty ratchet straps and 36-inch (1m) steel ground stakes, designed for wind stability up to 25mph (40km/h).
4. PROJECT BUDGET
Total Project Cost (Design, Build, & First-Event Support): $32,500.00
Budget Breakdown:
-
Design & Engineering ($4,500): Initial concept art, detailed 3D modeling for pattern making, structural engineering calculations for stability and wind loads.
-
Production and Fabrication ($22,000): Material procurement (high-grade PVC), high-definition large-format printing, sewing/sealing, internal baffling, the custom branded panel.
-
Ancillary Equipment ($2,000): Two (2) internal 1.5HP high-output continuous airflow blowers, heavy-duty storage bag, repair kit.
-
Rigging & Logistics ($2,500): Ratchet straps, 10x large ground stakes, and initial shipping to the park location.
-
Installation & On-Site Support ($1,500): First-time setup, training for park staff, and basic event support.
5. PROJECT TIMELINE
This project required a rapid, streamlined 7-week production schedule to meet the festival date.
-
Week 1-2: Concept & Design Approval
-
Kick-off meeting. Development of 2D concept art and 3D wireframe modeling. Finalizing the “Grimlock” name, logos, and the specific color palette.
-
-
Week 3: Engineering & Patterning
-
3D model is converted into a 2D cutting pattern (thousands of unique pieces). Material cut files are generated.
-
-
Week 4: Printing & Material Prep
-
Full-coverage digital printing is applied to the PVC panels. Panels are laminated for UV protection and precision-cut using automated CNC cutting tables.
-
-
Week 5-6: Assembly & Sewing
-
The complex sewing process begins, starting with internal baffles and moving to external body, heads, and wings. All seams receive double stitching.
-
-
Week 7 (Mon-Wed): Testing, Inflation, & QC
-
First full inflation on the factory floor (seen below). 48-hour pressure-test (checking seams, stability, and branded panel placement). Final quality control inspection.
-
-
Week 7 (Fri): Shipping & First Installation
-
Dragon is deflated, packed, and shipped. On-site installation and staff training completed.
-
This project was a success, delivered on time and within budget, with the “Grimlock” dragon achieving 100% brand recognition for the Park District.
