Cyber-Vanguard – IP Character Sculpture
1. Project Overview
-
Project Name: Cyber-Vanguard Life-Size Installation
-
Application: Flagship retail experience / E-sports event display
-
Subject: 2D-to-3D conversion of a virtual IP character
-
Material: Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) with high-gloss automotive finish
2. Project Background
To enhance brand engagement for a newly launched mobile gaming IP, the client sought to create a physical “bridge” between the virtual world and the real world. The sculpture serves as a primary photo opportunity and a landmark at the entrance of a high-traffic shopping mall’s gaming event zone. The goal was to translate a complex, stylized 2D character design into a durable, visually striking 3D object that retains the specific “anime-style” aesthetic.
3. Design Concept
The challenge lay in the translation of 2D aesthetics—which often rely on non-realistic proportions and exaggerated lighting—into 3D form.
-
Modeling Strategy: Sculptors used ZBrush to refine the 3D mesh based on the client’s 2D concept art, ensuring that the silhouette remained recognizable from multiple viewing angles.
-
Material Selection: Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) was selected for its high strength-to-weight ratio and ability to capture sharp, intricate details, such as complex armor panels and flowing hair.
-
Finishing: A premium automotive-grade polyurethane coating was applied to achieve a vibrant, scratch-resistant finish that mirrors the “cel-shaded” look of the original digital art. UV-resistant clear coats were added to ensure the colors do not fade under indoor mall lighting or incidental sunlight.
4. Technical Specifications
-
Height: 1.8 meters (approx. 5.9 feet), chosen to ensure high visibility while remaining at a “human-scale” that allows for comfortable interaction and photography.
-
Material Composition:
-
Core: Steel structural frame (internal armature for stability).
-
Shell: 6mm-8mm thick high-density FRP.
-
Base: Reinforced circular steel plate (hidden beneath the baseboard for safety).
-
-
Surface Texture: High-gloss (95% sheen) with hand-painted accent lines to emphasize “anime” contouring.
5. Project Timeline (Total: 8 Weeks)
| Phase | Duration | Key Activities |
| I. Concept & Modeling | 2 Weeks | Character analysis, 3D clay/digital modeling, client approval. |
| II. Mold Making | 2 Weeks | Master sculpt production, silicone/plaster mold creation. |
| III. Casting & Structuring | 2 Weeks | FRP lamination, internal steel armature welding, demolding. |
| IV. Finishing & Painting | 1.5 Weeks | Surface sanding, automotive painting, detail shading. |
| V. Shipping & Installation | 0.5 Weeks | Crating, transportation, on-site assembly and safety check. |
6. Project Budget Estimate (USD)
| Category | Estimated Cost | Notes |
| Design & 3D Modeling | $3,500 | Includes revisions and technical blueprints. |
| Material & Production | $7,000 | FRP raw materials, steel, labor, and mold production. |
| Painting & Detailing | $2,500 | Skilled artists for high-precision finishing. |
| Logistics & Installation | $2,000 | Custom crating, shipping, and on-site assembly. |
| Total | $15,000 | Excludes site permits or tax. |
7. Project Impact
The “Cyber-Vanguard” sculpture successfully functioned as an “Instagrammable” landmark. Due to the high-quality FRP finish, the sculpture maintained its pristine condition throughout the 6-month event period. It achieved a 40% increase in social media tagging and location-based check-ins compared to previous event setups, proving the value of high-fidelity physical IP representations in commercial environments.
