The Ocean’s Whimsy — Interactive Little Girl & Whale Sculpture for Children’s Museum

IP Sculpture Projects

In early 2025, Y Sculptures received an extraordinary commission from a newly constructed children’s museum in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The museum’s curatorial team envisioned an interactive entrance piece that would immediately capture children’s imaginations and set the tone for an experience centered on ocean exploration and environmental wonder.

Project Background

The client, a 12,000-square-meter children’s museum featuring interactive marine biology and environmental science exhibits, required a signature sculpture for their main lobby. The design brief called for a piece that was simultaneously whimsical and educational — something that would spark curiosity about marine life while being physically approachable for young visitors aged 2 to 12.

“We wanted a sculpture that functioned as both art and storytelling device,” said the museum’s design director. “Children should want to touch it, climb near it, and take photos with it. It needed to bridge the gap between fantasy and real ocean conservation messages.”

After reviewing several concept proposals, the museum team selected Y Sculptures’ design of a young girl riding a majestic whale — a universal symbol of the bond between humanity and the ocean. The concept drew inspiration from classic children’s literature about marine adventures while incorporating contemporary artistic sensibilities.

Design Concept

The final design features a smiling little girl with a playful ponytail, seated confidently atop a smiling whale. Her expression captures pure joy and wonder — eyes wide with excitement, arms outstretched as if greeting the ocean breeze. The whale is rendered with smooth, fluid lines that suggest graceful movement through water, its body adorned with colorful marine patterns including stylized waves, starfish, seashells, and coral motifs.

Color played a crucial role in the design narrative. The girl’s dress uses soft pinks and lavender tones that create a warm, approachable feel, while the whale’s body transitions from deep cerulean blue on top to turquoise and seafoam green below — echoing the natural color gradients found in ocean waters. The decorative patterns use bright coral orange, sunny yellow, and pearl white to create visual interest and educational talking points for parents and children.

The sculpture measures 2.5 meters in height, 3.2 meters in length, and 1.5 meters in width — large enough to be visually commanding in the museum’s 8-meter-high lobby, yet intimate enough for children to approach without intimidation.

Material Selection & Manufacturing

Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) was chosen as the primary material for several compelling reasons. First, its lightweight nature — approximately one-fifth the weight of stone or bronze — made installation feasible without extensive structural reinforcement of the museum lobby floor. Second, FRP’s exceptional weather resistance meant the sculpture could withstand the museum’s high-traffic indoor environment (including frequent touching by young visitors) without deterioration.

The fabrication process began with our in-house sculptors creating a full-scale clay maquette, allowing the museum team to evaluate proportions and fine details before proceeding to mold-making. Once approved, we produced a split fiberglass mold from the clay original, then laid up multiple layers of fiberglass matting and premium ISO resin to achieve a wall thickness of 5-8mm — providing the perfect balance of structural integrity and weight optimization.

Surface finishing was a multi-stage process: gel coating for the base color, followed by hand-painted detail work by our master artisans, and finally two layers of UV-resistant automotive-grade clear coat to protect against fading and yellowing over time.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1: Structural Stability. The sculpture’s design featured the girl’s figure positioned atop the whale’s back, creating a high center of gravity. We addressed this by engineering a hidden stainless steel internal armature that runs from the whale’s base through its body and into the girl’s torso. A weighted steel plate was embedded in the whale’s belly, ensuring the sculpture could not tip even under enthusiastic toddler leaning.

Challenge 2: Color Consistency. The client specified exact Pantone color matches to coordinate with the museum’s existing brand palette. Our finishing team created color samples under multiple lighting conditions and shipped physical color chips to Dubai for approval before proceeding with full production.

Challenge 3: International Shipping. The sculpture’s 3.2-meter length exceeded standard shipping crate dimensions. We designed a modular construction with three main sections (whale body, whale tail, and girl figure) that could be bolted together on-site, with seamless joint lines camouflaged by the decorative pattern work.

Installation & Reception

The sculpture was shipped in three modular crates via sea freight to Dubai, where our installation team traveled for on-site assembly. The entire installation — including base anchoring, joint concealment, and final touch-up painting — was completed in just two days.

Since its installation in March 2025, “Ocean’s Whimsy” has become the museum’s most photographed feature, appearing in hundreds of visitor social media posts daily. The museum reports that the sculpture has exceeded their expectations as both an art piece and an engagement tool, with parents using the decorative marine elements as conversation starters about ocean conservation.

“This sculpture brings our mission to life,” the museum director noted. “Every day we watch children’s faces light up when they see it. That’s exactly what we wanted.”
