Urban Whimsy — Abstract FRP Cartoon Sculpture for Singapore Shopping Mall
When the management team of a premier shopping destination in Singapore decided to revitalize their central atrium, they turned to Y Sculptures for a show-stopping centerpiece. The result was “Urban Whimsy” — a 3.8-meter-tall abstract FRP cartoon sculpture that redefined what mall art could be.
Project Background
The client, a luxury retail complex in Singapore’s Orchard Road district, was undergoing a S$50 million renovation to attract a younger, more experience-driven demographic. Market research indicated that Generation Z and millennial shoppers valued Instagram-worthy environments and unique photo opportunities as much as the retail offerings themselves.
“We needed something that would stop people in their tracks,” explained the mall’s brand experience director. “Not just a decorative piece, but a destination within the destination. Something that would trend on social media and draw visitors specifically to see it.”
After a competitive pitch process involving five international sculpture studios, Y Sculptures was selected based on our innovative approach to FRP fabrication and our portfolio of large-scale public art installations. The brief was deliberately open-ended — the client wanted us to surprise them.
Design Concept
Y Sculptures’ creative team developed a concept rooted in the tension between structure and whimsy. The sculpture features an abstract cartoon character with exaggerated proportions — an oversized head housing an expressive face, elongated limbs that curve and twist in impossible directions, and a body composed of interlocking geometric forms that seem to defy gravity.
The design language draws from pop surrealism and contemporary street art, with bold outlines, flat color planes, and playful distortion of human proportions. The character appears to be mid-step, one oversized shoe hovering above the floor, creating a sense of arrested motion that invites viewers to complete the narrative in their own imagination.
Color psychology was central to the design. The palette combines hot pink (energy, excitement), electric blue (trust, creativity), sunny yellow (optimism, warmth), and pops of emerald green (growth, harmony). These colors were selected not only for their visual impact but for their performance under the mall’s sophisticated LED lighting system, which cycles through different color temperatures throughout the day.
Material Selection & Manufacturing
FRP was the ideal material for this project due to three critical requirements: weight constraints (the mall atrium ceiling could support only limited additional load), complex geometry (the twisting forms would be prohibitively expensive in metal or stone), and color fidelity (FRP’s gelcoat finish allows precise Pantone matching).
The fabrication process began with 3D digital modeling, as the sculpture’s complex curves required CNC-milled foam patterns for mold creation. Our team spent four weeks refining the digital model, working closely with the mall’s structural engineers to ensure the single-point suspension system would safely bear the load.
The sculpture was fabricated in six sections, each weighing between 40 and 80 kilograms, with internal flanges and bolt connections designed to be invisible from the exterior. The hollow construction kept total weight to just 380 kilograms — approximately one-seventh what a comparable bronze piece would weigh.
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge 1: Suspension Engineering. The sculpture needed to appear floating, suspended from a single point in the atrium ceiling. Our engineers designed a custom steel hub with three hidden cable attachments inside the sculpture’s head, distributing load evenly through the FRP structure via an integrated internal framework.
Challenge 2: Scale Perception. At 3.8 meters, the sculpture needed to read clearly from both the ground floor and upper levels of the five-story atrium. We created a full-size digital projection in our workshop, allowing us to test scale perception at various viewing distances before finalizing proportions.
Challenge 3: Fire Safety Compliance. Singapore’s building codes require specific fire ratings for suspended installations. We used fire-retardant resin throughout the fabrication and obtained the necessary certification through third-party testing.

Results & Impact
Since installation in February 2025, “Urban Whimsy” has generated over 12,000 Instagram posts with the mall’s branded hashtag — a 340% increase in social media engagement compared to the previous installation. Foot traffic to the atrium level increased by 22% in the first month, and multiple tenants reported higher conversion rates from visitors who stopped to photograph the sculpture.
The project received a Silver Award at the Singapore Shopping Centre Association’s Design Excellence Awards and has been featured in architecture and design publications across Southeast Asia.
