The Liquid Galaxy – Luxury Residential Landscape Sculpture

Public Art

Project Timeline: 6 to 8 weeks (including 3D modeling, precision forging, seamless welding, and mirror-polishing)

Budget: $45,000 – $65,000 USD (Depending on specific site installation requirements and structural engineering)

Dimensions:

  • Height: 110 inches (approx. 2.8 meters)
  • Width/Depth: Custom scaled based on the twist ratio to optimize the visual silhouette (typically around 35 to 45 inches at the widest point)

Design & Material Highlights (For Portfolio/Proposal Use)

  • Materiality: Crafted from premium-grade 316 Marine-Grade Stainless Steel, ensuring ultimate corrosion resistance and a flawless, long-lasting finish for both luxury indoor lobbies and outdoor lawns.

  • Artistic Vision: A masterclass in “fluid art.” The combination of an avant-garde twisted silhouette and a flawless hand-polished mirror finish captures and refracts natural sunlight, creating the visual illusion of a shimmering, liquid galaxy.

  • Craftsmanship: Engineered with seamless one-piece molding technology, resulting in an incredibly smooth, touchable, and ultra-futuristic texture.

  • Impact: Standing at an impressive 110 inches, this landmark center-piece instantly elevates the architectural tone of real estate projects, serving as a high-traffic, photogenic icon that sparks conversation among prospective buyers.

Forging and Seamless Welding

Precision forging rather than casting is what gives this piece its particular quality of line. Forging works the material along the direction of the form, so a forged element has a denser, more uniform surface than the same shape cast, and it takes a polish far better — which matters on a reflective sculpture where every square centimetre of the surface is judged against the sky.

Seamless welding is the follow-on discipline. Sections are joined with full-penetration welds, and the welds are then dressed and worked back so that the joint cannot be found by eye or by hand. On a form that will eventually be mirror-polished this work has to be done properly at the time, because a weld dressed later, after polishing has begun, always leaves a witness mark in the reflection.

Mirror Polishing at This Scale

Mirror polishing a form of this size is a multi-week operation and it is the stage most often underestimated in a schedule. The surface is worked through progressive grit stages with the work inspected at each stage rather than only at the end, and the reason is simply that a defect left at stage two cannot be retrieved at stage six without going back to the beginning.

The practical consequences are a controlled finishing area, disciplined handling throughout, and protective covering that stays on the piece until it is placed on site. A scratch on a mirrored surface a metre across cannot be blended out locally — the repair is invariably a larger area re-polished, and that is the cost that clients are surprised by when they consider mirror finishes against satin ones.

Structural Fixing in a Residential Landscape

In a residential setting the fixing problem is usually the substrate rather than the load. A landscape position may sit over a slab, over compacted ground, or over services and irrigation, and the anchor arrangement has to suit what is actually there. Where a concrete footing is possible the piece is bolted through a concealed plate into cast-in anchors; where it is not, a deeper spread footing is formed and the plate is set into it.

Delivery access is the other half of the installation. A piece of this scale and weight arrives on a flatbed and is lifted into its final position, so the route from the street to the site — gate widths, paving strength, overhead branches — is checked before the date is fixed rather than on the morning of the lift.

Long-Term Care Outdoors

Stainless in a residential landscape is genuinely low-maintenance, but the correct maintenance is specific: fresh-water rinsing to remove irrigation and dust deposits, drying to prevent spotting, and a periodic non-abrasive polish to restore the depth of the surface. Anything abrasive, including household scouring products, will dull a mirror finish permanently.

The annual check should look at the base and the concealed plate, the welded joints where moisture can sit, and the surface for any change in reflectivity. In a planted setting the one condition worth watching for is prolonged contact with soil or mulch, which is where stainless in a garden actually begins to stain, so the base detail should keep the polished body clear of the bed.
