Brand Pop-Up Character Statue — Mobile FRP Mascot for Events

Commercial

1. Project Background

Lumière Beauty Group, a premium cosmetics brand with boutiques across the UK and continental Europe, commissioned Y Sculptures to create a portable character statue for their upcoming “Lumière Luminous” pop-up campaign. The brand planned to activate the sculpture across six major UK cities over an eight-week period, positioning it as the centerpiece of each pop-up installation. The figure needed to be visually striking enough to draw foot traffic into temporary retail spaces while being lightweight and modular enough to be assembled, disassembled, and repositioned within hours.

The brief specified a 2.0-meter-tall character statue that embodied the brand’s aesthetic: luminous, refined, and contemporary. The design direction favored a stylized female figure with elongated, elegant proportions — more fashion editorial than cartoon mascot. The finish was to be distinctive: a smooth ceramic-effect surface with subtle pearlescent undertones that would catch and diffuse light beautifully under both natural daylight and controlled pop-up lighting.

Unlike static installations, this project required a fundamentally different engineering approach. The sculpture needed to be light enough for a two-person team to transport and position, modular enough to break down for shipping between cities, and robust enough to withstand repeated assembly cycles without visible wear. This mobility requirement shaped every aspect of the fabrication process.

2. Key Features

  • Material: Lightweight FRP with 6mm wall thickness; internal aluminum tube armature for reduced weight
  • Dimensions: 2.0 meters tall, 1.0 meter wide, 0.9 meters deep — compact footprint for pop-up space efficiency
  • Weight: Approximately 45 kg total; designed for two-person handling without mechanical assistance
  • Modular Construction: Three-piece design (base, torso, head) with concealed stainless steel joinery for rapid assembly
  • Surface Finish: Ceramic-effect paint with pearlescent topcoat; hand-polished to a satin sheen
  • Carrying System: Integrated recessed handles in the base and torso sections for ergonomic transport
  • Assembly Time: Complete setup in under 30 minutes with standard tools

3. Design & Sculpting

The design process for Lumière’s character statue began with a thorough review of the brand’s visual identity system. The creative director provided extensive reference material including campaign imagery, packaging design, and in-store fixtures — all characterized by clean lines, soft gradients, and a palette of pale pink, cream, and metallic rose gold.

Our digital sculptors developed the character in ZBrush, working from the brand references to create a figure that felt authentically Lumière rather than a generic stylized human form. The final design featured an elongated silhouette with graceful neck and arm lines, one arm raised to cradle an abstracted circular form (representing the brand’s signature luminous orb motif), and the other arm resting gently at the side. The face was rendered with minimal features — smooth skin, subtle eye indentations, and a soft smile — creating an airless, iconic quality that transcended specific facial characteristics.

Two rounds of digital revision were completed over five days. The client requested that the raised arm be slightly more extended to better frame the luminous orb, and that the base profile be made wider for improved stability during transport. Both adjustments were incorporated promptly, and the final approval was received on day 7.

Because this was a travel sculpture rather than a fixed installation, the prototype phase was streamlined. Instead of a full foam maquette, our team produced a mid-scale digital rendering and a partial foam maquette of the head and upper torso only, sufficient to validate proportions and surface detail before committing to full-scale mold production.

4. Fabrication & Finishing

The modular construction approach required careful planning from the outset. The sculpture was engineered as three primary components: a weighted base plate, the main torso section, and the head with raised arm. Each section was fabricated as a separate FRP shell, then joined using concealed stainless steel pins and threaded inserts that allowed for tool-assisted assembly and disassembly without visible hardware.

The lightweight FRP layup used a combination of chopped strand mat and woven roving, with the resin system selected for low weight and high strength. The internal aluminum armature consisted of 20mm diameter tubes welded into a lightweight triangular structure — significantly lighter than steel while providing ample rigidity for the sculpture’s dimensions and expected handling forces.

The ceramic-effect finish was achieved through a meticulous multi-stage painting process. A white base coat was applied and cured, followed by a tinted pearlescent layer in the exact brand-matched pale pink. The pearlescent paint was sprayed in thin, even coats to build depth without obscuring the underlying white. A final clear topcoat with a satin UV-resistant formulation was applied and hand-polished to achieve the desired ceramic-like surface quality.

Integrated carrying handles were molded directly into the FRP during fabrication. These recessed grips are positioned at ergonomically optimal heights on both the base and torso sections, allowing two people to lift and carry the sculpture with balanced weight distribution. The handle openings are finished with smooth, rounded edges to prevent injury during frequent handling.

5. Delivery & Installation

The disassembled sculpture components were packed in custom-molded foam inserts within three flight cases — one for the base, one for the torso and head, and one for accessories including the luminous orb prop, assembly tools, and the touch-up paint kit. Each case was designed for standard courier handling and featured reinforced corners and interior padding for maximum protection during transit.

For the UK deployment, the shipment was handled by a specialized event logistics company familiar with pop-up installations. The flight cases were designed to stack efficiently in the brand’s delivery van, with a total cargo footprint of just 2.4m × 1.2m × 1.0m.

At each pop-up location, the installation team arrived 90 minutes before setup and completed full assembly within 25 minutes. The process was straightforward: position the base, insert the torso alignment pins, secure with the provided tool, attach the head section, and finally mount the luminous orb prop to the raised hand. No adhesives, welding, or specialized tools were required on-site.

Throughout the eight-week campaign, the sculpture was transported between six cities and reassembled a total of 11 times. Upon return to the Y Sculptures workshop for inspection, the sculpture showed no visible wear on the finish, no loosening of joints, and no damage to the carrying handles — a testament to the robustness of the modular engineering and the quality of the surface treatment.
