Theme Park Character Statue — Medium-FRP Mascot Sculpture

1. Project Background

Emerald Springs Theme Resort, a mid-sized family entertainment destination spanning 45 acres in the Kansai region of Japan, commissioned Y Sculptures to create a series of character statues for their newly developed “Storybook Pathway” — a 300-meter themed promenade connecting the main entrance gate to the gift shop district. Unlike the resort’s existing massive inflatable landmarks and oversized animatronic figures, the design brief specifically called for medium-scale character statues that would serve as friendly, approachable greeters along the pathway, creating intimate photo opportunities rather than overwhelming vistas.

The character chosen was “Mochi,” a stylized Japanese spirit mascot designed for the resort’s seasonal festival campaign. The sculpture needed to appear welcoming and whimsical while withstanding the humid subtropical climate, heavy summer rainfall, and intense UV exposure typical of the Osaka region. The client emphasized that the figure should feel “alive” at eye level — close enough for children to touch and photograph, yet substantial enough to command attention in a busy pedestrian corridor.

This project occupied a distinct niche in the resort’s sculpture strategy: it was too substantial to be a temporary promotional prop, yet too personality-driven to be classified as abstract public art. The character had to read clearly from 20 meters away while revealing hand-painted details up close — a balance that required careful engineering of proportion, surface treatment, and viewer sightlines.

2. Key Features

• Movement Design: Dynamic waving pose with one arm raised; weighted base with anchor points for semi-permanent outdoor installation
• Applicable Scenarios: Theme park pathways, gift shop plazas, outdoor event spaces, resort entrances
• Maintenance: Annual touch-up recommended; anti-graffiti coating allows easy cleaning with mild detergent

3. Design & Sculpting

The design process began with a comprehensive review of Mochi’s existing 2D character sheets, which featured an anthropomorphic rice cake spirit with rounded proportions, large expressive eyes, and a permanent friendly smile. Our sculptors translated these flat designs into three-dimensional form, carefully exaggerating certain features — the oversized head and small body — to preserve the character’s iconic silhouette while ensuring structural stability.

A 1:1 foam prototype was hand-sculpted to lock in the proportions before any mold was made. The client reviewed the foam maquette via video call and requested three adjustments: slightly wider stance for better balance, more pronounced cheek dimples, and a warmer hand gesture. These refinements were completed within two days, demonstrating the flexibility of our rapid prototyping workflow.

The final approval sketch, rendered by our in-house character artist, showed Mochi in a dynamic welcoming pose with one arm extended forward and the other resting on the hip. The color palette — soft cream body, blush pink cheeks, and indigo-blue accessories — matched the client’s official brand guide exactly. Client sign-off was obtained on day 5 of the project timeline.

4. Fabrication & Finishing

Following approval, a two-part silicone mold was created around the foam prototype, then reinforced with a fiberglass parent mold for structural support during demolding. The FRP shell was hand-laid using chopper gun technology with a resin-to-glass ratio optimized for the 8mm target thickness. An internal stainless steel skeleton was welded to handle the dynamic cantilevered pose — the raised arm required a hidden steel brace extending from the base through the torso to counterbalance the forward weight.

Surface preparation involved multiple stages: grinding all seam lines, applying filler to smooth minor imperfections, and sanding to a glass-smooth finish. The painting process followed a strict color-matching protocol. The cream body received three coats of base color with a clear intermediate sanding step between each. The blush pink cheeks were hand-painted with a soft gradient effect to mimic the natural color transition of the original character design. All painted surfaces were sealed with a high-build clear coat containing UV absorbers, followed by the anti-graffiti top layer.

The final sculpture weighed approximately 85 kg — light enough for two-person handling but substantial enough to remain stable in outdoor wind conditions. The base was finished with a textured stone-effect paint to blend with the pathway pavers.

5. Delivery & Installation

The sculpture was packed in a custom-built wooden crate lined with 50mm foam and secured with internal braces to prevent any movement during transit. A forklift-accessible base plate was integrated into the crate design, allowing straightforward offloading at the resort.

On-site installation was completed by our technical team in a single day. The statue was positioned approximately 3 meters from the pathway edge, ensuring unobstructed pedestrian flow while maintaining optimal photo angles. Four stainless steel anchor bolts were set into the existing pavers using epoxy adhesive, and the sculpture was secured from underneath with concealed mounting hardware.

Post-installation, the resort’s maintenance team received a care guide and a touch-up paint kit containing matching cream, blush, and indigo paints, along with a small brush and application instructions. The sculpture opened to the public on the resort’s summer festival launch date, and social media metrics showed the Mochi statue becoming one of the most photographed landmarks in the Storybook Pathway within its first month of operation.
