Waterfronts, coastal walkways, and seaside plazas are among the most cherished public spaces in any city. Yet too often, the art installed in these locations feels disconnected from their environment — generic abstract forms that could be anywhere. The Tidal Crest changes this by creating a sculpture that quite literally reflects its surroundings.

An 8-meter stainless steel wave form captured at the moment of cresting, the Tidal Crest is both a landmark and a mirror. Its mirror-polished surface reflects the changing sky, the moving clouds, the colors of sunrise and sunset. No two visits are the same because the sculpture is never the same twice.

Why 316L Marine-Grade Stainless Steel

Coastal environments are among the most corrosive on Earth. Salt spray, humidity, and UV radiation destroy ordinary metals within years. We use 316L marine-grade stainless steel — an alloy with molybdenum content that provides exceptional resistance to chloride corrosion. This is the same material used in naval architecture, offshore oil platforms, and premium marine hardware.

The mirror #8 polish finish is achieved through a multi-stage grinding and polishing process: course grinding → fine grinding → buffing → final mirror polish. The result is a surface reflective enough to see your own face, durable enough to withstand decades of coastal exposure.

Design and Engineering

Wave Form Development

The wave geometry was developed using computational fluid dynamics data of actual ocean wave patterns, translated into a parametric 3D model. The result captures the precise curvature and energy of a wave at the moment of breaking — scientifically accurate yet artistically composed.

Panel Fabrication

Each of the 7 interlocking panels is CNC plasma-cut from 8mm 316L plate, then hand-ground and polished to a mirror finish. The brushing on selected sections is applied using a directional orbital sander, creating a subtle grain that catches light differently than the mirror surfaces.
