“Whisper Pavilion” — Corten Steel & FRP Botanical Garden Sculpture

Gardens & Resorts

Great Gardens Need More Than Landscaping — They Need a Soul

A botanical garden or resort landscape can have the finest plants, the most meticulous hardscaping, and still feel empty. What transforms a beautiful garden into an unforgettable one is a focal point — a structure that draws the eye, shelters the visitor, and creates a sense of place. The Whisper Pavilion is that structure.

Inspired by the layered petals of a lotus unfolding at dawn, the Whisper Pavilion is a 4-meter corten steel and FRP pavilion sculpture designed for botanical gardens, resort landscapes, meditation spaces, and event venues. It is simultaneously sculpture and shelter — art that you can enter.

The Material Dialogue: Corten Steel Meets FRP

The Whisper Pavilion is built from two complementary materials that age beautifully together. The primary structure is Corten A weathering steel — a steel alloy engineered to develop a stable, protective rust patina that stops further corrosion. This warm, earthy orange-brown surface harmonizes with natural landscapes and actually becomes more beautiful with time.

The canopy petals are hand-laid FRP (fiber-reinforced polymer) in a white-to-rose gradient finish. Unlike painted metal, FRP allows for organic, flowing shapes that would be prohibitively expensive in steel. The translucent quality of the material means that sunlight filters through the petals, creating a soft, dappled light effect on the floor of the pavilion.

Technical Specifications

  • Primary structure: Corten A weathering steel frame, pre-weathered + UV-stable clear coat
  • Canopy: 12 individual FRP lotus petal panels in white-to-rose gradient
  • Dimensions: 4m height × 6m canopy diameter
  • Interior: 3.5m diameter usable seating area with integrated curved bench
  • Weight: 600 kg total (12 modular sections)
  • Seating capacity: 6-8 adults comfortably
  • Foundation: 6-point concrete anchor pads (engineered per site soil conditions)
  • Lifespan: 25+ years with minimal maintenance

Design and Fabrication Process

Digital Sculpting and Engineering

Each petal panel was digitally sculpted using parametric design tools, then 3D-printed as a master pattern for FRP mold production. The steel structure was engineered to withstand typhoon-force winds (design load: 180 km/h) while maintaining a visually delicate appearance.

Modular Fabrication

The pavilion is fabricated in 12 interlocking modules (6 steel frame sections + 6 FRP petal assemblies), each sized for standard shipping containers. This modular approach reduces on-site installation time and allows access to sites with limited crane access.

On-Site Assembly

A 4-person team completes assembly in 3 days: day one for foundation preparation, day two for steel frame erection and bolting, day three for petal panel installation, seating integration, and final touch-ups.

Real-World Applications

Kyoto Botanical Garden — Meditation Pavilion

Installed as the centerpiece of a new Zen meditation zone, the Whisper Pavilion now hosts daily meditation sessions for up to 20 participants. Garden management reports a 45% increase in visitor dwell time in this zone, and the pavilion has been featured in two Japanese architecture publications.

Bali Resort — Sunset Viewing Point

A five-star resort in Ubud installed a Whisper Pavilion on a hillside overlooking rice terraces. The structure serves as both a sunset cocktail lounge and a yoga deck. Guest satisfaction surveys rate it as the resort’s most photographed feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the corten steel rust without deteriorating?

Corten A steel forms a tightly adherent patina layer that actually protects the underlying metal. Unlike ordinary rust, this patina is stable and stops spreading once formed. We pre-weather each structure in our facility before clear-coating, ensuring a consistent appearance from day one.

Can the pavilion be installed on uneven terrain?

Yes. The 6-point foundation system can be adjusted for slopes up to 15 degrees. Our engineering team will survey your site and provide customized foundation specifications.

What happens to the FRP panels in extreme weather?

FRP is rated for -40°C to 80°C and is resistant to hail, salt spray, and UV degradation. The UV-stable gel coat is backed by a 10-year warranty against yellowing or chalking.

How much does a Whisper Pavilion cost?

Pricing depends on size, materials, and site conditions. Typical installations range from $38,000 to $65,000 USD, including fabrication, shipping, and on-site installation.
