Design Concept

“Luminous Reef” transforms the National Aquarium’s gallery hall into a living, breathing underwater fantasy — entirely from inflatable sculpture. Spanning 30 meters across and 4.5 meters high, the installation recreates a vibrant coral reef ecosystem with over 20 distinct inflatable coral forms: branching staghorn corals, massive brain corals, undulating sea fans, and towering pillar corals. Each form is meticulously sculpted to mimic the organic textures of real reef structures.

The installation carries a powerful environmental message — while visually stunning, half of the coral forms are rendered in bleached white to raise awareness about coral bleaching caused by rising ocean temperatures. A central “Heart of the Reef” domed structure (6m diameter) changes color throughout the day, transitioning from healthy vibrant hues during visitor hours to a stark white at closing time, symbolizing the urgent need for conservation action.
